Maia and the others watched the playground anxiously but to their relief no one started behaving strangely.

“Maybe the cakes were OK after all,” Maia said to Bracken when she got home.

“Maybe, but it does sound like this Mrs Sands might be the kind of person to do dark magic though,” said Bracken. “Can you spy on her?”

Maia nodded and took her mirror from her pocket. Sitting cross-legged on her bed, she whispered Mrs Sands’s name and held her breath. Would the magic show her anything? If it just showed her darkness then that might mean Mrs Sands was blocking anyone spying on her by magic and that would be a sure sign she was guilty.

However, a picture formed. It showed Mrs Sands sitting on her sofa at home watching TV. A man, who Maia guessed must be her husband, was sitting in an armchair. It all looked very normal. Maia scanned the room. There were plenty of plants in pots but absolutely nothing else unusual. But Auntie Mabel’s house looked normal, she reminded herself. Maybe Mrs Sands has a secret room somewhere where she does dark magic, just like Auntie Mabel had in her basement.

As she watched, Mrs Sands rubbed her back and winced.

“How’s it feeling?” her husband asked.

“Really bad today,” she said.

“You must go to the doctor again,” he said. “You can’t go on like this.”

She nodded. “I will. I’ll go for a little walk later and see if that helps ease it.”

It wasn’t exactly an interesting conversation to listen in on. Maia spoke to the mirror. “Show me all the other rooms in the house,” she said.

The picture changed. She saw a kitchen, a dining room, a hallway – all looked normal. A master bedroom, a spare bedroom, a bathroom. There was nothing unusual at all.

“Show me the garden,” she said.

It was dusk outside but the mirror showed her a beautifully kept garden with neat flowerbeds filled with spring bulbs. A figure moved in the shadows near the lounge window. Maia caught her breath as she recognized her. Ionie! Another movement caught her eyes. She had Sorrel with her, too!
